How we choose builders
Every builder on every list goes through the same checks. Here's exactly what we look at, and what never affects a ranking.
The short version
Every builder on The Best Builders holds a current builder licence on the state regulator's public register, has a track record in the kind of work the list covers, and has a solid independent reputation. We rank on those things. No builder pays to be listed, and no builder can pay to move up.
1. Start wide
For each city and each type of build, we start with the builders working in that area: from Google Maps, industry award lists from HIA and Master Builders, review sites, and the builders already on our lists.
2. Check the licence
Every builder needs a current licence or registration from the regulator in their state, such as the QBCC in Queensland or NSW Fair Trading. We look the licence up on the public register and check it matches the business. A builder we can't match to a current licence doesn't go on the list.
3. Check it's the right kind of builder
A builder who mostly does kitchens doesn't belong on a renovation builder list, and a volume home builder doesn't belong on the commercial list. We only list builders whose own website shows real work of that type.
4. Check reputation
We look at independent reviews, including Google, industry awards, and how long the business has been building. A strong record built over years counts for more than a handful of five-star reviews.
5. Rank the list
The order weighs fit for that kind of project, reputation, years trading, and how openly the builder explains its process, licence and warranty. A small, focused builder can rank above a big one. Where a city doesn't have ten builders that meet the standard, we list fewer.
How the site is paid for
If you fill in a quote request, we pass your project to up to three builders that suit it, and we may be paid by builders for those introductions. That never changes who's on a list or the order. You never pay us anything.
Keeping lists current
Each list shows when it was last updated. Google ratings refresh twice a month, and we recheck licences and contact details whenever a list is reviewed. Builders that stop meeting the standard come off.
Spotted something wrong? If a detail is out of date, a licence has lapsed, or you've had a bad experience with a listed builder, tell us and we'll recheck it.
